Behind the Red Door . . .

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 | |

This past Saturday at Spring 4th, behind the Red Door on Spring Street in Atlanta, Big City Burlesque performed a two set show, that dazzled the large crowd, most who were in vintage clothing, which only added to the spectacle.

Big City Burlesque is a troupe devoted to classic 1940's burlesque, and transported everyone in attendance back to yesteryear with painted dolls, two-tone swing cats with pencil thins & retro vaudeville charm.

Accompaning the stage was Big Mamma's House of Burlesque from Charlotte, NC, who continued the theme of Vaudeville and Retro Burlesque.

The show featured the 2006 Creative Loafing Reader's Choice Award Winner for Best Burlesque Performer in Atlanta, Diamond Ice and Pin-Up Vixen's Miss March 2007, Veronica Lashe, along with Horse Power at the Park's 2006 first runner-up, the Lovely and Talented, Talloolah Love.

Hepcat Mike was master of ceremonies, and started the show with a cool rendition of Cole Porter's, "Let's Misbehave".

The show continued on with Big City standards, such as the Hindi Belly Dance and Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy by Iron Lilly. Talloolah Love enticed the crowd with her classic, Caravan, and she shared the stage with a new rendition of Eartha Kitt's song, "Evil", with Big City Beauty, Veronica Lashe.

Dottie Von Polka teased the crowd, as the band played the polka while she stripped . . . Take-it-Off, Take-it-Off !!! (Did anyone else catch that glimpse?) and the Gorgeous Crème Brûlée performed, Green Stockings . . .

During Intermission, a Big City Shimy Contest was held to see if 3 lovely babes had what it takes to be a burlesque girl, and based on audience reaction to pick a winner. This is always a fun part of the show . . .

Tits McGee from Big Mamma's in Charlotte, perfromed 3 numbers, In the Mood by Glen Miller, I'm Your Man, (in drag) and the Cool, Book Worm and the Babe set, He's So Unusual, while Big Mamma herself blew the crowd away with her songs, Hey Big Spender, and When You're Good to Mamma, Mamma's Good to You . . .

The Gorgeous Diamond Ice finished the show with her take on the classic fan dance, Lament . . .

It was a great night, that combined a cool art & photography show of the Big City Beauties, and Atlanta's own DJ Spider teamed up with DJ Aesthetic for this special event, it was a night to remember . . .

The show was a fund-raiser to send Talloolah Love, Veronica Lashe & Iron Lily to Las Vegas for the 2007 Miss Exotic World Pageant and Striptease Reunion, June 8-10 in historic Downtown Las Vegas.

These hard working girls don't make much entertaining and taking us back to yesteryear, so be supportive of your local burlesque girls.

I'd like to wish the Three Big City Beauties Best of Luck in Vegas . . .

Hey Derek-

Nice post, buddy! I was wondering just what was going on when you were craning your camera over the edge of the stage. Now I see how you got that nice shot of Tits McGee's, ahem, assets. Nice work, that.

I wanted to make sure that there was a big shout out to my brother MC, John Carnie, who made his MC debut that night. He's also the acrobat / tumbler in our gypsy caravan number (to "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and is a real all-around artiste...

...that is to say when he's not at work at the carnival helping little girls onto the merry-go-round, or visiting his parole officer.

Just kidding there. ;-) John Carnie's a swell guy.

Cheers-
