And now let's welcome Mister Wombat to the crew!

Last Saturday, I took in the latest show by the Syrens of the South, and it was also the last to be held at The Highland Inn Ballroom. Success has proved to be a double-edged sword for the ladies as future shows will be at the Relapse Theatre. Subtitled "An Evening of USOh's", this was a themed show for the 4th of July timeframe. It also featured performers from Effie's Club Follies in Athens, GA as well as local faves Reneá Le Roux, Tim Monteith (and his girls), the talented juggler, Enzo, and Raleigh's own Rachel Riot. Co-hosts for the evening were John Carney and Sabrina Pandora. The ladies from Effie's were incredible, and their routines were well-done including: "Campaigning" - duelling Hillary Clintons (and in the end there was a clever homage to the mud wrestling scene between Reagan & Gorbachev in Frankie Goes To Hollywood's video for "Two Tribes"), "Border Patrol" - a creative way to distract a border guard, "Pocahontas & John Smith", and "Bush & Cheney" - featuring a clever pulling of puppet strings (I'm using titles from Effie's photographer Shari) as well as solo performances from Bun-E and Scarlett Noir. Reneá performed twice, featuring a wonderful interpretation of "In The Navy". The Syrens each had two feature acts, including Talloolah's "Too Darn Hot" with her special "wink-and-a-nod" to Donna Reed & Veronica's "Der Führer's Nose" in her finest Bavarian beer maiden dress and pigtails. By the end of the evening the SRO audience had all been thoroughly entertained. I hope to see you at the next event, the Syrens' 1st Anniversary show on August 23d @ Relapse.

I second Broderick's comments. Mister W did a helluva job.

Let me know if you want to cover any other burlesque happenings about town and we'll get you a press pass.
